The Art of Connection: Rico No Suave's Journey from IT to Entertainment

Dr Ariella (Ariel) Rosita King Season 2025 Episode 18

Send us a text

Rico No Suave captivates us with the remarkable story of his transformation from IT professional to celebrated talk show host. What started as simple recordings in his car has blossomed into a thriving entertainment platform that's now granting him access to celebrity interviews and prestigious film festivals.

The conversation reveals Rico's unique approach to human connection - applying the problem-solving mindset from his network engineering background to understand and relate to people. "Listen first, react later" becomes his mantra for success, allowing him to create comfortable spaces for guests regardless of their on-camera experience. This skill particularly shines when helping nervous interviewees find their voice, transforming potential awkward moments into engaging conversations.

Rico's recent triumph at the Chandler International Film Festival marks a pivotal moment in his career trajectory. His infectious energy and genuine approach to interviewing celebrities like Tara Reid on the red carpet led festival organizers to spontaneously invite him to emcee their VIP gala. Rather than standing before the audience, Rico chose to position himself in the center of 150 attendees - a metaphor for his people-centered philosophy that earned him universal praise.

Behind the charismatic host is a dedicated team of producers and editors who understand both the vision and the struggles of building an entertainment business. Rico doesn't shy away from discussing challenges, acknowledging that success requires persistence, authenticity, and genuine care for others. His dream of reaching the Oscars and Grammys feels not just possible but inevitable given his trajectory and talent for connecting across cultural boundaries.

Have you considered how listening skills might transform your own personal and professional relationships? Perhaps Rico's approach offers valuable lessons for us all.

Dr King:

Hello and welcome to the Business of Life. Today we have a very special guest, my very good friend, senor Rico Nosuave. Welcome.

Rico No Suanve:

How you doing.

Dr King:

I'm so glad that you're here. I'm so happy. Would you please introduce yourself to our audience.

Rico No Suanve:

Yeah, well, you know, coming on with Dr Ariel King, it's me, Rico Dos Suave, and I am super happy to be here. Yes, I am a talk show host, but it's always good when other talk show hosts and someone like yourself, your caliber, is here to talk to me about my journey as well. So I'm super happy to be here on the show. As far as with you.

Dr King:

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. You know so many people and we have an audience all around the world. I'd love them to know about you. So can you tell us a little bit about yourself and then, when you can, about your show.

Rico No Suanve:

Yeah, you know, one of the biggest things about me is always making people happy. That's number one. And also being kind, being humble, but also, you know, just a person of listening first, then reacting later. The one thing that I've always learned from my parents and you know the thing about listening is to understand humans, understand people, you know. And also you know overall it's just just being kind to each other, but not just being kind to be. There's a lot of things behind kind, that's giving advice, that's helping others when they're on their way up, and also people that's already on their way up to try to help them maintain by staying up, by giving them advice and also being able to help them, because, you know, we only got two ears and one brain. You know. And one thing about those two ears one ear might have something come in, the other one might have it come out, you know. And then you got the brain that don't register it, you know. So for me, it's just more of being able to talk to a lot of great people and being able to have them understand. You know life in general.

Rico No Suanve:

Now, I come from an IT background, so I'm a network engineer in general. Now, I come from an IT background, so I'm a network engineer. So when it comes to computers, when it comes to the internet, when it comes to security, I'm always a problem solver. So when I'm solving issues because that's all I get hey, you know, something is not working. Can you help me fix this? Of course I can Let me help you, right. And if it's something that I can't, I will research it and see if it's fixable, right. And then I apply that to humans, right? I say, hey, you have an anger problem. Okay, what makes you angry, right? What makes you? What ticks you off? Right? What makes you feel like?

Dr King:

Ave Maria, yo no se que paso. You know what's going on. Yo tengo muchos problemas. ¿qué hacer con mi vida? No entiendes esto.

Rico No Suanve:

Exactamente, exactamente. So it's like, what do I do? And also for people that want to get into this business. You know you have to be real with them and you have to tell them and say listen. The reason why I'm here is for you to understand that everything is not just candy and flowers. You know, you just can't get into this business and think you're just going to soar right away, because it's always, always the business of life that you have to understand about keeping it going and the struggles behind it. So for me, I'm that person to be able to help people grow, but also for them to be able to go on to their path as a routine, consistently, doing it right.

Dr King:

I love it Right A mentor, but a mentor extraordinaire.

Rico No Suanve:

I appreciate that.

Dr King:

Fabulous, it's fabulous. How long has your show been going and why did you start to? Why did you start your show? Tell us more about that. That's so interesting.

Rico No Suanve:

Very good. So I love telling a story, and the one thing about telling a story is kind of like where Jeff Bezos, the guy from Microsoft, now I'm going crazy now.

Dr King:

To say the Microsoft guy.

Rico No Suanve:

You guys know who he is. You know we start from somewhere. We start from the garage, we start from the basement and we start from a foundation of getting things going. My foundation was me, in a car I would drive to work, talking about hey everybody, welcome to the Rico no Suave show. And today we're going to talk about relationships, or we're going to take 15 minutes and we're going to talk about finances. We're going to talk about Mother Nature, because in Chicago here, you know, Mother Nature can be bipolar, you know. So we don't know.

Dr King:

That's right, you're in Chicago and in America, yeah that's very important.

Rico No Suanve:

So one thing is is that understanding as far as how to be able to talk to people and public speaking, to the Internet, right, and people that comment and say, oh my God, I love that? And then also, you know, just going from there? So the Rico no Suave show started off in my car. I used to do it three times a week Monday, wednesday and Friday, right, and then sometimes on Sundays I would actually do, you know, basically, hey, let's talk about this. I just thought about this, or I witnessed this last night and I want you guys to see exactly how this all came about my life, right. And then you know, after a while, people I would say maybe about a year or so, maybe a year and a half I was doing that and then someone came to me and said, hey, rico, I was like yes, and it was a gentleman. And he said, hey, I have a radio station online. Would you like to join me?

Rico No Suanve:

And I was nervous because I was like, wow, I don't know. You know, you start thinking about it. You start asking people, hey, what do you think about me doing this? And you kind of second guess yourself and I said, yeah, let's do it. So me being in IT me also being an MC for events things became a way of not being organized to the way that I wanted it to be and it just didn't work. So it was only lasted for two months and I said you know what? I kind of like this, but I think I'm more fit for TV, because that's what my mom always told me. She's like you know what, rico, you're always fit for TV. I'm going to put you on a commercial one day, which never happened, but I still love you mom. Well, still could still could.

Rico No Suanve:

Still could exactly. So now I've been doing it since 2018 and I started with I did have a co-host and of course, we're no longer, as far she's no longer with me but during that time, when we first began, we actually started that together because the personalities was just there and we were rocking it out. So that's what I started bringing on live guests. So I had like one table, I had a mixer, I had one camera and I was like this is the basement for me. You know what I mean? This is the basement. And so from then on, from 2018 until now, you know it's been growing and it's been growing really big and actually, you know, now I'm getting more and more into building my business, but also, you know, being able to do red carpets now. So now I'm starting to get fabulous film festivals and I just came back from doing Phoenix Chandler International Film Festival and actually it was like Chandler I'm sorry, chandler Arizona, and that was awesome. I was able to interview a couple celebrities, which was awesome One.

Dr King:

I got Sarah Reed. Thank you so much from.

Rico No Suanve:

American Pie Urban Legend, big Lebowski, thank you so much. And Pie Urban Legend, big Lebowski, thank you so much. And then Sean McNamara, big time film festival filmmaker, I should say, and director. He just came out with the movie Reagan. I don't know if you heard about that movie. They just came out, reagan.

Dr King:

Yeah.

Rico No Suanve:

I was able to interview him as well. I interviewed him twice and interviewed Tara three times. My goodness.

Dr King:

It's good when you put in the work. Let's be clear you put in the work. You talked about seven, eight years already. It's not like it happened in six months or a year. You've laid down the foundation and you've had an incredible guest.

Rico No Suanve:

That's really wonderful that it's moving forward yeah, and I did have this young lady that was famous as well too, dr ariel queen king, on my show. She actually came on my show too. Um, and it was all.

Dr King:

It was awesome, so I want to say that I loved being your guest. I had so much fun, it was so interesting and it was quick moving and you were quick witted. It went so fast. I really enjoyed that show. You know, I think with this interview let's see if we can actually give people the link to that show so they can see what you do.

Dr King:

You're amazing, thank you, you're really amazing, not just making me feel comfortable, but also just allowing my personality to come out, and I just felt like I was talking to an old friend and having a good time.

Rico No Suanve:

That's the whole objective, and the objective is also to give you and my other, you know celebrity friends exposure, but also for the people that have a movement, right Activists. You know we talk a lot about mental health awareness right as far as on the show, and we also talk about what's the awareness for the month, or we even talk about food sometimes. You know what is what is this month? Oh, it's blueberry day. Blueberry month, oh really. Oh, a national blueberry muffin day, you know.

Dr King:

So I love that. Food is very important. Food is a way to culture.

Rico No Suanve:

It is, it is.

Dr King:

Food is important all over the world, so that's a great topic.

Rico No Suanve:

It is.

Dr King:

It's a good topic.

Rico No Suanve:

It's fun, man, my show is really good, and so for you guys, it's TheRicoNoSuaveShowcom. You can go to the website, or Rico no Suave Show on Instagram as well. So overall, you know, I think the business is really blossoming now. And big shout out to my team, my crew. It's five producers and then I got four video editors. So I'm super happy about my team and you know they understand the struggle, they understand the vision.

Dr King:

But they're doing it together.

Rico No Suanve:

We're doing it together.

Dr King:

Can I ask for your team is it possible to give us a story of one of the most difficult times that you were able to turn around, and then the second part of a story would be one of the most successful times?

Rico No Suanve:

that was a bit surprising well, the successful one is just recently. Um, and let's talk about the struggle. The struggle. I think one of the biggest things about being a talk show host is people that are short with their words and also with personalities behind. Short with their words. So that can be a struggle within themselves, because you only have so many commercials to go through, right, and you can't do as many as you would love to. But I think, for the most part for myself, you know, it's a way of being able to bring the personality out. The struggle is that everyone's personality is not the same, so I try and start off with them being their friend, right, you got to be their friend first and then also be the business partner later, right. And when that happens is you want to be able to mesh those two together. So one of the biggest things is being able to at least get them started, to get them comfortable.

Rico No Suanve:

People do come on to the show nervous. There's some people that don't know about the camera. They're like, hey, I'm only doing this because I know you right, or I've talked to you right, and they're like listen, I know that you have grown and I know that there's a lot of people that's going to be watching this. So you know I'm nervous. Just tell me what I need to do as soon as they tell you hey, tell me what you want me to do. That's when you have to become that leader of a talk show host to be able to help them. So I think the biggest struggle when you're a talk show host is how to connect with people, connect with humans and also to be able to guide their hand, because if you don't, your show might not be as big as what you want it to be, because you have to be able to try to connect with everyone right and also react and let them speak, let them talk and then go from there. But you have to let the people that are struggling let them talk so they can get into a routine. That means that that hour will probably go like this or it can go like this oh my God, when is it going to be over? So it's that piece.

Rico No Suanve:

The second question that you asked me. It's that piece. The second question that you asked me. It just happened this past weekend, so I was asked to do a VIP. Now, part of the Chandler International Film Festival was me being a red carpet host. The success behind it was to be able to show them my personality on the red carpet and how to make people feel comfortable while on the red carpet. There's some people that's, filmmakers that never had someone to be energized like me on a red carpet, because I believe that when you're on a red carpet, it should not be boring. The red carpet should always be fun, and that's what I'm showing, but that also shows them how I can actually be An emcee for hosting big events such as, like the Oscars, the Grammys and all of those and all of those big ones.

Dr King:

And you know, I, I'm hearing a vision. This way, I'm hearing vision, vision coming into reality. I can. And when you say that, actually I saw it, so bravo for you. Listen. Don't forget to get me an extra ticket, OK.

Rico No Suanve:

I will. I got you All day. I'll make sure it gets there FedExed.

Dr King:

I'll be waiting at the door. I am not joking, I see it, I see it, I see it. You know I can, I can understand, with the personality that you have and the ability that you have, um to connect to people, no matter who they are, whether they are nervous or not, whether they are big talkers or not, and all of that experience that you have actually helping people bring out who they are while you're talking to them, um in a show, which is a very difficult skill to hone. So I can see you doing very, very well on the red carpet and helping people to feel um comfortable and to feel good about it and not to feel stupid, because it is a bit strange having all these cameras and everybody around you and there's a, there's a, there's a lot of activity. Let's say, people think the red carpet is one leg carpet and one person's there. No, there are a whole string of people on that carpet being interviewed. So that makes a big difference, um, for this experience for you. What were you the most surprised about?

Rico No Suanve:

the surprise was when everything was kind of over, so it was always the first and the second, so it was two days. It was Saturday and Sunday, but the event has been going on for 10 days, but we was credited for the last two days. What I was surprised about the event was how well that I didn't realize I did until the VIP gala dinner, where you had the celebrities in the audience and then you had the organizer to come up to you and say hey, rico, can you welcome everybody to the VIP gala? Wow, I was like me.

Dr King:

They gave you another role because they said that you were so welcoming and that you were so good at putting people at ease.

Rico No Suanve:

Yes.

Dr King:

That they wanted to see that again. Out of all those people, they chose you. Yes, that's fabulous.

Rico No Suanve:

Yes, and I was surprised. So I took upon myself to be like, okay, this is not a wedding, but it's set up like a wedding and I had multiple roles to do as an emcee, so everybody was clapping, everybody. I got everybody hyped and it found its way. I want to say it found its way to stardom when I was able to interview more celebrities and filmmakers on the red carpet for the VIP gala event and to be able to do it like it was live. So they actually had the microphone and the microphone normally is through the camera Right Itself, but this was overhead. This was in the venue where I had to interview them live overhead, where you could hear over the speakers while they were eating dinner, and it was amazing wow, yeah, that, that, that sounds challenging it is but but um challenging in a positive way and it worked.

Rico No Suanve:

What did it?

Dr King:

feel to um, have them basically say to you listen, you were so good and we really welcome your energy. We'd like you to open this up and to get these uh, opportunities that you didn't know that you would have before you arrived there. What was that like?

Rico No Suanve:

so I think the the vibe of it, uh, I think the vibe for me was nervous, uh, I was nervous, course, and for them to be able to welcome me, to welcome them, to be able to walk around. So there was 150 people and I had to say you know what, if I'm going to connect with everyone, you're not going to stand in front of them, you're going to go in the middle. Go in the middle where everybody's surrounding you, so you can feel the vibe. So I did that and I was like welcome everybody, welcome to the VIP gala. It is me, rico Nosuave, and I am super happy to be here. How, how you guys doing they went crazy.

Dr King:

That's fabulous. Yes, I love the fact that you said, instead of being in front of them, I'm going to go in the center and feel it and be with them. We're going to go through this together.

Rico No Suanve:

Wow, that. That made. That made everything even better. The organizer Matesh. He was like everybody keeps talking saying your name, Rico, no Suave. This, Rico, no Suave that I went up to the bar they say hey, your name, Rico, no Suave.

Rico No Suanve:

I'm like, yeah, how did you know that? There's like, and this was before I even started. This was before I even started. Hey, Rico, no Suave, it. This is before I even started. I was like the word gets around, you are the man I'm like I wish, but hey, I'm going to try my best, Right. And that's what happened, you know, and everyone was very nice. People came up to me and said thank you so much for interviewing me. Some of the filmmakers that was up and coming, that was doing really great things for the world. They said thank you so much for interviewing me. It was a pleasure, it was an honor for me to share the red carpet with you and Tara's whole crew. Tara's whole crew from American Pie. They weren't in American Pie, but they were part of a movie called Dr Quarantine and they actually came up and said we want to get interviewed by you and only you let's go.

Dr King:

Wow, wow, I kept in contact with, and it's good can I say you know I'm sorry to interrupt you. I'm thinking about you, know, I'm thinking about this, this amazing time that you had and the amazing time that you allowed people to have with you. You know, and I can see, it started years ago Because even in your car, the one thing that you wanted to do was connect with people, talk to people, be with people, commiserate with people, share with people, and then what you've done is you've done it in another venue, in another way. Um, that's not just important because of the movie business, but important because people can tell if you're genuine or not very quickly, yes, and you connected with them genuinely, yes, and so that has to be.

Rico No Suanve:

I can see how that be a highlight, but not the end of what you've done in your career yes, and I think that feels really good to be able to get the feedback from people, to basically get the accreditation of how well you've done. And I think you know, as far as for me, I'm the you know we always say when you invest in yourself, you're the worst critic. Yourself is you're the worst critic of yourself. And you know I ask people, how did I do? And they say you did fabulous, you did great. And then some will say, hey, I will tell you if you didn't. I mean, and I take credit, and they would.

Rico No Suanve:

I said I know exactly if I need to interview you, how I need to interview you, and that's good, because that way I can actually make sure that I get better with my skills based off of personalities, and I think that's very important for anyone that wants to be a talk show host is to be able to respect those wishes right, even though they might not say it, but respect the wishes of how you're talking to them and go from there. So yeah, it was surreal, man, but it was also good. Oh, it was also good, so it was good good times.

Dr King:

I love it. I love it. Let me see. So, what do you envision next, right? So, what do you envision next, right? So what? What do you see coming forth? And, and you're curious how are you going to get there?

Rico No Suanve:

Yeah Well, I can't spill all of the beans on there unless I eat them.

Dr King:

Okay, well, maybe. Well, how about just your vision of where you'd like to go in the future, what you'd like to do in the future? Is that okay? Yes, oh, yes, for sure, okay great For sure.

Rico No Suanve:

So one of the things is that, when you're in this business is to get, of course, more exposure to more events and also your connection as far as with people that's actually doing big things. Right For them to be able to see how well you're actually doing in order for them to be able to invest their time in you. For me, the vision is, of course, to be able to get to the Oscars, to be able to get to the Grammys, to be able to get to those big red carpet type deal and also the film festivals. You'll be surprised, in regards to some of the film festivals that's out there, that's just coming up, how some of the celebrities are actually there with a purpose.

Dr King:

I'm sure of it, the film festivals actually are quite important. Yes, very, very important.

Rico No Suanve:

They are, and I think when you start going to these film festivals and then also this helps my portfolio bigger. As I said, here are the celebrities that I interviewed. Here are the activists that I actually did. Here are some of the musicians that I interviewed. Here are some of authors like yourself that I interviewed, right, and also public speakers, people that I interviewed so they know that I have a range of talent to be able to talk to different people in different industries. My vision is to be able to continue that, but, you know, continue it from if I was to go to, let's say, the Oscars, of course, to be able to interview one of my favorite, Anthony Hopkins.

Dr King:

You know, as far, as oh wow, I'm looking forward to that. I'm already ticking that visually. Okay, let's go yes. It's fabulous.

Rico No Suanve:

Let's go and so.

Dr King:

I think I can see that, even after this interview. I can see that even after this interview, someone is going to look at it, however many years from now, and say, but he did it. It's like, well, of course he did. He said he was going to do it.

Rico No Suanve:

That is my dream, that is my ultimate goal to be able to get to stardom. My objective is to become at that caliber and be famous. You know, as well, too, I look at trevor noah as one of our mentors. Uh, I love jimmy fallon because jimmy fallon has that, um, that, that charisma, right, and also I like it that uh, and being bilingual as well, too, helps out right to be able to have different people very important, right, and I think that's very cultural, if you could say bicultural, understanding various cultures.

Rico No Suanve:

Yes, the difference yes, all different cultures, all different cultures, and I think that's that's such a great thing and that's what I did with um, the, the chandler international film festival. I have people from china, from japan, from india, from the. I have people from the uk that that flew in from the uk. I have people from china, from japan, from india, from the. I have people from the uk that that flew in from the uk. I have people from dominican republic, uh, and then of course, all around the world.

Dr King:

Amazing, oh amazing. I'm sure they're happy to be there yes, ma'am, yes um, wow, you're. You know, every time we talk, I can't stop smiling. I get this thing on my cheeks. I just love the energy. I love being around you. It's wonderful. May I ask for our audience believe it or not, 30 minutes is already up, which is unbelievable. Could you please give our audience more information about how to find you and what you're doing, so then we can keep track of what you're doing? Thank you, sure sure, no problem.

Rico No Suanve:

So, of course, the website, the rico no suave showcom you can actually go there. I always update it as well too. You'll see some highlights for the highlight reels. Uh, also youtube. You can also. Everything that you put out there is an image of you, of giving to the community something to smile about and also to be able to be inspired about. So I say thank you, dr King, because you always find us for life, people and also for the business.

Dr King:

Thank you. Wow, I'm so honored. Thank you, sir, and I want to thank our audience for being with us today and remember if I'm not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, then when? That was by the philosopher Hillel. And I say if not me, then who? Thank you for joining us.
